Flathead Lake

Montana's Water Playground

Flathead Lake Photos

Beautiful Flathead Lake ranks among the best of Montana Vacation Hot Spots. This gorgeous area is located in the Flathead Valley, between Kalispell and Polson.

The surrounding forests and mountain ranges are home to a variety of Montana wildlife. No matter where you go, you’ll be surrounded by spectacular views of surrounding mountain ranges, and a feeling of spaciousness.

Flathead Lake is the largest natural fresh water lake west of the Mississippi. It is fed by both the Swan River and the Flathead River.

With a depth of 300 ft, a length of 28 miles, and a width of almost 15 miles at the widest point, there are countless opportunities for summer fun and recreation. This vast water playground covers approximately 188 square miles, and has plenty of room for boating, skiing, swimming, fishing, and camping.

Endless Days of Summer

Local summertime weather is warm and pleasant, with lots of sunshine during the height of summer. Best of all, the sun won’t go down until after 10 pm, so you can enjoy long, luxurious days of endless fun. If you’re really enthusiastic, you can see the sun rise over the lake about 5 am.

The lake has several public access points, including several state parks and campgrounds. The parks are excellent places for family outings, day trips, or overnight camping.

State Park recreation areas such as Wayfarers State Park and West Shore offer great opportunities for camping, as well as easy access to the lake. Other lodging facilities include private cabins, bed and breakfasts, and motel accommodations.

In addition to Kalispell and Polson, several small Montana communities are nestled around both the west and east shore routes of the lake, including Bigfork, Woods Bay, Somers, and Lakeside. Each community offers a unique flavor to the area.
